Reasons Why Indonesia Is Ready to Host Asian Games 2018

The last major sporting event that Indonesia hosted was the 2011 SEA Games — which, like the Asian Games, were split between Jakarta and Palembang in South Sumatra — following corruption scandals and a deadly stampede at the football final.

But the Asian Games are on a different scale altogether: 9,500 athletes in 40 different sports, compared to 28 for the last Olympics, and held in two different cities for the first time in the event’s history. Thus, this raises an uncomfortable question for Indonesia: is Indonesia ready to host Asian Games 2018?

Two main factors as to which Indonesia is better suited and equipped to host the 2018 Asian Games than it was in the 2011 SEA Games.

Firstly, Indonesia has experienced a surge in “popularity” or simply put we are more in the limelight of global attention. This is mainly due to Indonesia’s growing geopolitical influence as well as its rise in awareness towards Indonesian culture through pop culture (even our president, Joko Widodo made a vlog featuring King Salman of KSA) so hosting the Asian Games would turn Asia’s, if not the world’s eyes to Indonesia. Enough reason for Indonesia to capitalize this opportunity to increase its international presence.

Due to a recent surge of reform and stricter anti-corruption measures, Indonesia is now relatively less corrupt than it was back in the late 2000’s. Meaning to say, the funds allocated for proposed infrastructure projects to support and facilitate the games would be less likely to be misappropriated and embezzled (as in the Wisma Hambalang case before). Some serious efforts have been made in order to rejuvenate the city to make it more worthy of an Asian Games host such as the increase in the pace of the MRT line construction so it is safe to say that Indonesia is in the right way in accepting the proposal as it does not only stand a chance to capitalize this momentum, but it also provides the tangible benefits for citizens of Jakarta and Palembang in terms of public transportation but also the entire Indonesian populace (to a lesser extent) to the pride of hosting an international event, the image Indonesia is able to portray to an international level and the potential revenue sources from hosting the event itself.

Indonesia Preparation to Host Asian Games 2018

Indonesia as the host of 2018 Asian Games see this opportunity as something prestigious and has done some preparation to welcome this event. Both Jakarta and Palembang, as the hosting cities, governor has plan several upgrades on facilities, and build infrastructure to make sure this             In Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, sport facilities also have been upgrading for example the training building, swimming stadium, hockey field, archery field, and soccer field.
