For half a century, the Colombian government fight
over one of its country oldest, largest, and richest guerilla armies, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarios de Colombia (FARC) or Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia. Established in May 1966
with the purpose of overthrowing Colombian government and install a Marxist
regime, FARC had changed into an actively involved terrorist group on
drug trafficking and politicians kidnapping to fund the camps provision and
operations throughout its existence.
The narcoterrorism
and kidnapping practices conducted by FARC must have endangered the many lives
of Colombian, making insecurity flourish all over the country and even the
region. Seeing this, the Colombian government feels the urge to stop the terror
by dealing with the rebellious group through a negotiated peace deal signed in
November 2016. The signing of the peace deal shows that the conflict was
resolvable and actually a constructed one, driven by political and economic
motives.
FARC was first
established by two members of Colombian Communist Party, Manuel Marulanda and
Jacobo Arenas due to the feeling of being neglected by the Colombian
government. They reside in countryside Marquetalia, Tolima, Colombia, with the
goal of creating society in which their needs will be fulfilled. This goal is
very ideal back then, considering the 60s Colombia are so filled with rampant
corruption and all politicians never pay attention to people. Thus, poverty
flourished and society feels so unsatisfied with their government. Unsatisfaction
leads into rebellion and it creates situations where lots of people choose to
join the rebel group since at least they have something to fight for.
