November
2016, Donald Trump won the 2016 US Presidential Election and defeated
Democrat’s Hillary Clinton, making him the 45th President of the
United States. Trump won with a slight margin, regardless of pre-election
nationwide poll that claimed Hillary was far beyond him and going to win. Some said this winning is because of the change of
voters’ behavior, especially in pro-democrat or “Blue Wall” states such as
Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and some major big swing states, like
Florida and Ohio. Seeing this change, one of the speculation that exist was the
presence of huge numbers of fake news that affect the judgement of voters and
swing voters, especially before and during the times of election.
This
speculation got worsen when reports about Trump hiring Cambridge Analytica (a
company that specialized in data mining) during his campaign for election
leaked to the internet. What the company did is actually analyzing users’ likes
and comments on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to determine the
political preference of the users.
Once the
algorithm find the pattern and decide what political stance a reader belongs to,
it will intentionally send and post news that is related only to particular
political stance to the timeline of that person in order to cloud reader’
judgement and start shifting reader’ political perception. During that posts
sending, this is where the fake news is used and play its role, which is it will
always appear on the timeline of the reader and exacerbates a judgement of a
reader about particular candidate.
